How to Calculate Quarter Hours?

The math depends on the kind of quarter hours you want to calculate, see the preceding paragraph.

Semester Hours to Quarter Hours

To change semester hours to quarter hours we multiply the semester credits by 1.5, because two academic semesters equal three academic quarters.

Students of an university employing the semester system typically earn 30 (2 x 15) credits per year, whereas students of an university employing the quarter system typically earn 45 (3 x 15) credits per year.

Quarter Hour Increments

To ensure consistency in time reporting, work hours should be recorded exactly, or in quarter hour (.25) increments rounded to the nearest 1/4 hour.

Quarter hour increments means that if mod(minutes, 15) equals eight or more the minutes are rounded up to nearest quarter hour, whereas seven minutes or less are rounded down to the nearest quarter hour.
